brother kevlar

My brother flew in from Santa Cruz to help me sheath the port side hull with Kevlar. Unfortunately, "Big Brothers" latest wars have made this stuff fairly expensive. With new leadership, America will most likely be able to reduce the need to turn this stuff into vests. I think it looks better on a boat than a desert tan Hummer.

Hi Allen,

Just to make sure I understand...you're sheathing the entire hull *sides* with Kevlar, as well as the bottoms? That's not in the plans (is it?) but it seems like a good idea (more dock-side scrape protection) at the expense of cost and weight of course.

BTW, I sent you a question in email awhile back at your baseline... gmail acct. If you have a chance to respond, that would be cool. Let me know if you didn't get it.

Happy Thanksgiving,
jay

hi jay. he's not gonna sheath the whole thing - it's pretty much what you see in the photos is as much as it gets. the plans include a kevlar option to sheath in kevlar 8" above the waterline and ~2/3 of the length. you're right about costs - that stuff is stupidly expensive! and the weight addition will be about 50-75 lbs, i'd imagine (allen, is that right?) but the upside, of course, is a waaaay tougher hull section. the way kevlar spreads out the impact force, it should help to keep the thing from being holed by a low-floating container in the shipping lanes, and take a little sting out of those seemingly inevitable accidental groundings. and i suppose there's 75 pounds worth of peace-of-mind there!
